Paul guides clients through environment and planning law, specialising in regulatory compliance in the waste sector.
Waste, Recycling and Resource Recovery
Drawing on his extensive hands-on legal experience and doctoral thesis in waste law (Centre for a Waste-free World scholarship, QUT), Paul helps clients navigate the complex legal and regulatory landscape of Australia’s circular economy. He advises businesses, innovators, and peak bodies across the waste, recycling, and resource recovery sectors in securing land use approvals and environmental licences, and finds practical solutions for contamination, remediation, and regulatory enforcement.
Paul’s unique combination of legal training and background in mass communication means he can break down complex legal and technical issues into clear, actionable advice and help clients in the waste industry engage confidently with regulators and communities.
Alongside Ross Fox, he is part of the exclusive legal team advising the Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association (WCRA) and the Australian Organics Recycling Association (AORA), supporting sector leaders to manage risk, shape reform, and promote best-practice innovation.
Environment and planning law
Paul works closely with FWO’s Environment and Planning team to make sure clients meet their legal obligations and align environmental compliance with commercial and sustainability goals.
Through his work at Australia’s leading environmental community legal centre, Paul gained first-hand experience in significant law reform initiatives and high-profile litigation before federal and state courts, including cases involving major project approvals and regulatory decisions. This experience has provided Paul with a deep understanding of how regulators, courts, and stakeholders approach complex environmental issues, knowledge he now applies to help clients manage disputes, engage effectively with authorities, and navigate law and policy reform.
