In a draft determination handed down yesterday, the Fair Work Commission has announced that it intends to vary the pay rates for some junior workers who are employed under the General Retail Award 2020.

The changes affect junior workers classified as Retail Employees Level 4 (employees who perform work above Level 3 or who have completed an appropriate trades course or hold an appropriate Certificate III and arerequired to use their qualifications in the course of their work) or above.

Previously, a junior employee covered by those classification was entitled to be paid a percentage of the relevant adult wage rate for that classification. Under the commission’s decision, junior rates will not apply to employees at Levels 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Interested parties have until 26 March 2021 to file any comments on the contents of the draft determination. Comments are to be sent to amod@fwc.gov.au. In the absence of any comments, the final variation determination will be issued and will take effect on 1 May 2021.
